Cotton vs linen canvas: Which one should I choose?
Share
If you’ve been looking into canvases, you’ve probably come across this question:
Cotton or linen?
It’s sometimes made to sound more complicated than it actually is. The truth is, both are brilliant to work with in their own way. The difference comes down to how you want your work to feel and look.
What is a cotton canvas?
Cotton canvas is the most commonly used surface for painting.
It has a smoother, more even texture, which makes it easy to work on (especially if you’re just getting started or want a clean finish). It’s also slightly more forgiving. Paint tends to sit evenly, and you don’t have to fight the surface.
What is a linen canvas?
Linen is made from flax fibres and has a more natural, textured surface.
You’ll notice it straight away: it feels a bit more organic, slightly less uniform. Because of that, it can add more depth and character to your work, even before you start painting.
The real difference (what actually matters)
Most explanations focus on technical details.
But in practice, it comes down to this:
- Cotton → smoother, cleaner, more controlled
- Linen → more texture, more variation, more raw
How they actually look (this is where it really changes things)
The biggest difference isn’t just how they feel to paint on however, it’s how they look.
Our cotton canvas has a thicker, denser feel with a soft, natural off-white tone. It creates a clean, more uniform base. Something that feels solid and grounded from the start.
Linen is completely different. It’s lighter, more textured and has that raw, brown tone you can see straight away. It feels more natural and exposed, and often more premium too.¨
Before you’ve even added paint, the two already set a very different mood. Cotton feels more minimal and controlled, whilst linen feels more raw and expressive.
Neither is "better". They just create a different starting point. Leading your work in different directions from the beginning.
So which one should you choose?
If you’re unsure, keep it simple:
- Go for cotton if you want smoother, more even texture with a soft, natural off-white tone
- Go for linen if you like a raw, slightly brown tone, texture and a more natural, expressive feel
Why the base still matters most
Whether you choose cotton or linen, the way the canvas is built and stretched makes the biggest difference.
A well-constructed frame and properly stretched fabric will always feel better to work on. And it shows in the final result. It’s the difference between something that feels temporary and something that belongs on your wall.
Make it even simpler
Where most people get stuck is not in choosing between cotton and linen, but in figuring out how to get a good version of either.
Finding the right materials, making sure they work together and knowing where to start. That’s what we designed Plan to solve.
