Why we started Plan: Making high-quality art at home, made simple

It all started around a year ago. We wanted to create something for our own homes, but quickly realised how unnecessarily difficult it was.

We both care about design. About how a space feels. And we wanted artwork that meant something to us. Not something mass-produced, but something we made ourselves. The problem was getting started.

 

The reality of trying to make your own art

If you’ve ever tried to create your own artwork at home, you probably know this already.

You need a decent canvas, a frame, tools, paints and something that actually feels good to work with. And suddenly you’re sourcing things from five different places, spending more than expected, and still not quite getting what you had in mind.

It didn’t feel simple or accessible. And it definitely didn’t feel like something you could just start.

 

So we made what we couldn’t find

Plan came from a very simple idea: What if everything you needed to create high-quality art at home was just there? Not something that feels like a “craft project”, but something that actually feels like a proper starting point.

 

The base mattered most

For us, it always started with the framed canvas.

We didn’t want anything plasticky or pre-made that felt flat or temporary. We wanted real fabric canvases, cotton and linen, something you stretch yourself, something that feels like the beginning of something real.

And then came the frame. We couldn’t find one we liked, so we designed our own. Every frame in our kits is custom-made and handcrafted in Edinburgh. Built to be solid, simple and something you would proudly display on your wall. Because if you’re going to put time into creating something, the base should match that.

 

More than just making something

When our product started coming together, we realised just how much of the magic lies in the whole process. For me, especially, it became a creative escape.

A much needed pause, a way to switch off and a way to focus on something with my hands instead of constantly over thinking. I didn’t realise how much I needed that until I had it.

Taking that time for yourself - building the frame, stretching the canvas and painting well and truly slows everything down.

 

And then comes the pride

The feeling of stepping back and looking at something you made, on a canvas you built yourself, is completely different. There’s a level of pride in it that’s hard to explain.

And because the base is so solid and considered, the end result always feels right. Like it belongs in your space.

What Plan is really about

At its core, Plan is simple.

It’s about making it easier to create your own one of one art at home. Something that looks good, feels good to make, actually lasts and means something to you. Without overcomplicating the process or lowering the quality.
